Helambu Trekking

Trip Description

Helambu Trekking is one of the nearest and most common trekking routes located just 75 kilometers north of Kathmandu. The Sherpa villages of Helambu due north of Kathmandu valley presents an easy getaway. Helambu is low elevation and the Sherpa villages make it interesting. Starting with a short drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal the trail to Helambu climbs on to the Shivapuri ridge from where there are sweeping views of the central Himalayas. Following a ridge-line, the trek heads north to Thare Pati before turning east to Melamchi Gaon and Tarke Gyang the principle villages of this area. From here we visit Shermathang before descending to the Melamchi river to end our trek with a drive Melamchi Bazaar back to Kathmandu.

Overview

Helambu trek starts off at Sundarijal all the way to Tarke Gyang. From there you can walk via Sermathang or take a ride via Kiul Takpa Kharka. Some people also do the trek in reverse starting from Tarke Gyang.

The trek is perfect for someone who enjoys the time with nature and has a thing for the Buddhist artwork and monasteries. The trek is rich with the scenery of green forest, waterfalls, snow cap mountains and beautiful landscapes. Helambu trek extends from the Taramarang in the north to the tree limit of beautiful Gosainkunda Lake and lower plains of Jugal Himal. The route goes through breath-taking glaciers of Langtang Valley and an incredible variety of flora and fauna along the way. The villages in the route are surrounded by Buddhist Monasteries. The small cottage restaurants and amiable people along in the village add more ambiance and feel to the trek.
