The Upper Dolpo trek is one of the restricted treks located in the far western region of Nepal. This trek takes to the isolated region of the western part of Nepal, which has amazing landscapes along with the beauty of Tibet. It was open to foreigners after 1989 only. It is characterized by a semi-arid topography with a deep narrow hidden valley that offers a rolling semi-desert highlands. Hence, the trek gives the vibe of Tibet to most of the foreigners. Also, the local culture and tradition of this place are influenced by the Tibetan people.

The Upper Dolpo trek gives the trekkers the feels of the beautiful, spiritual, and mysterious hidden valleys of western Nepal. This area is located in the Himalayas rain shadow area of Dhaulagiri. The visitors can get to see the beautiful and technical high passes along with the steep trail that goes through the forests along with the beautiful sceneries of the waterfalls.  

The trek beings after a short flight from Nepalgunj. It starts at Juphal. You need to be very cautious while you start the trek as most of the time, the area remains restricted. The trekking trail moves up to the Phoksundo National Park and takes you to the beautiful monasteries, striking valleys of the region, and geographical diversities too. It also takes you through the Phoksundo Lake too. You can witness the beauty of the flora and faunas of Nepal. The popular animals found in the region are Himalayan blue sheep, Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, goral, and thar. The trek goes through the Tarakot valley, Phoksundo Lake, Tarakot Village, Shey Gompa, Kangla Pass, Jeng La Pass, Saldand La Pass, Dho Tarap, and various other monasteries and landscapes.
